Clash of civilizations = immigration debate in this country.

Referring to the raging immigration crisis.....

“Politically, this is all about the clash of civilizations; one civilization indigenous to this continent, the other seemingly hell-bent on continuing the policies of manifest destiny.” ~ Robert Rodriguez

Fremont Mayor to resign.....have the chickens come home to roost?

"Fremont made national headlines in June when voters there approved an ordinance barring illegal immigrants from renting or working in the city of 25,000. The ordinance has yet to go into effect as the city battles a lawsuit over its constitutionality...

"While the illegal immigration issue is not the reason for his resignation, it was a factor, said Edwards, a retired businessman. “Do those things play a part?” Edwards said. “Absolutely. It’s one of the issues that wears you down. It’s hard to leave. But I just feel it’s time.”"

Equality Nebraska Talking points*

As a free society, Nebraska has always integrated new immigrants into communities across Nebraska. We must continue to adopt a humane approach to this reality, reflecting our unique culture, history and spirit of inclusion.

1.       FEDERAL SOLUTIONS: Immigration is a federal policy issue between the U.S. government and other countries — not Nebraska and other countries. We urge Nebraska's congressional delegation, and others, to lead efforts to strengthen federal laws and protect our national borders. We urge state leaders to adopt reasonable policies addressing immigrants in Nebraska.
2.      LAW ENFORCEMENT: We respect the rule of law and support law enforcement's professional judgment and discretion. Local law enforcement resources should focus on criminal activities, not civil violations of federal code.
3.      FAMILIES: Strong families are the foundation of successful communities. We oppose policies that unnecessarily separate families. We champion policies that support families and improve the health, education and well-being of all Nebraska children.
4.      ECONOMY: Nebraska is best served by a free-market philosophy that maximizes individual freedom and opportunity. We acknowledge the economic role immigrants play as workers and taxpayers. Nebraska's immigration policies must reaffirm our global reputation as a welcoming and business-friendly state.

Nebraska must always be place that welcomes people of goodwill.

LDS Church Declares Support for Utah Compact on Immigration Reform | Religion Dispatches

"The LDS Church declared its support yesterday for the Utah Compact on Immigration Reform, a five point statement that acknowledges the contributions of immigrants to the American economy and Utah communities, opposes the separation of working families, expresses support for the education and well-being of all children (regardless of immigration status), and characterizes immigration as a civil matter requiring compassionate and humane policy reform, not a criminal matter to be pursued by local law enforcement."

"In an additional statement issued yesterday, Church officials urged legislators to adopt immigration reforms that “balance love for neighbors, family cohesion, and the observance of just and enforceable laws.”

Rep. Todd Compares Children of Illegal Immigrants to "Rats"

by Jackson Baker on Thu, Nov 11, 2010 at 6:43 AM

"The immigration issue, which at times became a subject of heated rhetoric during the 2010 gubernatorial campaign, continues to fester on Tennessee’s political scene.
A wire service report by Lucas Johnson of the Associated Press from Nashville indicates that State Rep. Curry Todd,, a Collierville Republican whose District 95 includes parts of Metropolitan Memphis, compared children born within the United States of illegal-immigrant parents to multiplying rats."

A majority of voters support comprehensive immigration reform

"A majority of voters support comprehensive immigration reform that includes legalization measures as well as border security, according to a poll released today. The poll was conducted by Lake Research Partners on behalf of the pro-reform group America’s Voice between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 and surveyed 1,200 likely voters in last week’s midterm elections. Most said they picked candidates in the midterms based on economic issues; pollsters said the prioritization of the economy allowed for high gains among candidates who advocate enforcement-only immigration reform despite the public’s overall policy preferences on immigration......"
“The American people are out in front of the politicians on this issue,” Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice, said in a press release. “There’s a vocal and visible anti-immigrant minority that makes some politicians believe they speak for the majority. As this polling makes clear, they don’t.”

THE TRUTH------How Immigrants Create More Jobs

"The study, “Immigration, Offshoring and American Jobs,” was written by two economics professors — Gianmarco I. P. Ottaviano of Bocconi University in Italy and Giovanni Peri of the University of California, Davis — along with Greg C. Wright, a Ph.D. candidate at Davis.  Over all, it turns out that the continuing arrival of immigrants to American shores is encouraging business activity here, thereby producing more jobs, according to a new study."

"The study notes that when companies move production offshore, they pull away not only low-wage jobs but also many related jobs, which can include high-skilled managers, tech repairmen and others. But hiring immigrants even for low-wage jobs helps keep many kinds of jobs in the United States, the authors say." .....

"American economic sectors with much exposure to immigration fared better in employment growth than more insulated sectors, even for low-skilled labor, the authors found. It’s hard to prove cause and effect in these studies, or to measure all relevant variables precisely, but at the very least, the evidence in this study doesn’t offer much support for the popular bias against immigration, and globalization more generally.
We see the job-creating benefits of trade and immigration every day, even if we don’t always recognize them."

Bruning's involvement with Arizona immigration law questioned

"Senator Brad Ashford of Omaha said Bruning should not be taking on so-called cause célèbres when Nebraska has such budget troubles. Having the attorney general involved in some other state's litigation is troubling, he said."

9th Circuit Appeals Court Weighs in on AZ's Immigrant Law

"During the hearing on Monday, the appellate judges abruptly ended a discussion of a provision of the state law that would forbid illegal immigrants from working in the state, saying that a decision in another case already blocked the state from making it a crime for such immigrants to work.
The judges focused on the central question of whether a state could take it upon itself to enforce federal laws.
“If I don’t pay my income tax, can California come along and sue me?” asked Judge Carlos T. Bea."
